In his own consultancy Jim advised DEFRA on the development of a marine planning system for the new Marine Management Organisation and has also advised CCW on their marine planning objectives as well help develop Cornwall's maritime strategy. He has also participated in the ESRC/NERC research project, 'New approaches to managing marine ecosystem services in the marine environment'.
In 2004/5 Jim led Terence O'Rourke's contribution to DEFRA's Marine Spatial Planning Irish Sea Pilot. This was an RTPI Award winner for spatial strategies in 2007. Jim subsequently worked on a series of projects advising government agencies on marine planning while at TOR.
Chesil Beach is one of the UK's most important marine environments where marine planning will provide a basis for future decision making.
