Jim's experience of community and stakeholder engagement started early in his structure plan work and has continued as an area of expertise into the present day. His chairing and engagement skills have been used by local authorities and other organisations on a number of contentious schemes.
He helped to devise a community consultation strategy on Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects and National Policy Statements for Planning Aid.

As Head of the School of Planning and Architecture in Bristol he led its development as a significant centre for research and the leading training centre for professional planners and politicians in planning in the country. He also headed the research team advising the RTPI's Education Commission which led to the body adopting new qualification requirements.

He is regularly called upon to chair conferences for organisations as varied as CBI, Coastal Futures, CIWEM/ODPM, Planning Aid, TRICS and the Local Authority World Heritage Forum. Jim has broadcast on BBC Breakfast, Country File, You and Yours and local radio and TV.
